About the Northern Black Hills

A small mountain range located in South Dakota and Wyoming, north of the 45th parallel, the Black Hills feature extensive Ponderosa Pine Forests enveloped in mixed-grass prairie land. From miles away, the Black Hills appear to be exactly that.  Black.  Henceforth the name, Black Hills.  The Northern Black Hills of South Dakota include the charming towns of Spearfish, Deadwood, Sturgis, Belle Fourche, and several other small towns interspersed throughout the region.

Classified as a Dfb Koppen climate type, Black Hills highlights a warm-summer humid continental climate. The landscape has a significant temperature variation. For example, temperatures average from 10 to 20 degrees in winter and 80 to 90 degrees in summer. As a result, you get the best of all seasons. There is no shortage of immersing yourself in the beauty of the SD outdoors in winter, spring, summer or fall.

Getting to the Northern Black Hills

Located in the heart of the United States, the Northern Black Hills in South Dakota are easy to access by car or plane. If you plan to drive to the landscape, U.S. Interstate 90 is the main route. You can also access the area via east-west highways, such as US 16, US 18, US 212, SD 34, SD 40, SD 44, and north-south highways, US 85, US 385, SD 79, and SD 89. The scenic drives in the Northern Black Hills are part of the region’s charm, and is therefore many traveler’s preferred method of transportation. The nearest regional airport is Rapid City Regional Airport, however there are multiple municipal airports in the region.

Things to Do in the Northern Black Hills

In short, from badlands to pine-covered hills and granite spires, there is so much to see and experience in the SD Black Hill’s northern corner. You will need several days to explore the caves, forests, bison herds, and rural back-road drives. In addition, you will want to experience the plentiful outdoor activities ranging from cycling to hiking, boating, gold-planning, rock climbing, and downhill skiing. In doing such, the trails will help you take a look into the past, the caves will let you experience the life of an explorer, and the waterfalls are where you can unleash your adventurous soul.

Spearfish Canyon

If you are a nature enthusiast, Spearfish Canyon, with some of the region’s best scenery, will appeal to you. The canyon is home to cliffs, waterfalls, and forests that can be easily accessed from the 22-mile-long Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. Local restaurants seem to pop up out of nowhere. In true SD hospitality, they serve up home cooked meals enjoyed in rustic atmospheres reminding you of the fact that you are in a cherished region of America’s history.

Sturgis

South Dakota is known as the biker capital of the United States. This is due to the fact that nearly half a million classic and modern motorcycle owners enter Sturgis every August to take part in the fascinating Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. One of South Dakota’s biggest and loudest events, it attracts people from all corners of the world to share their love for hogs, choppers, and cruisers.

Sturgis, located on Interstate 90, also offers year-round access to other Northern Black Hills attractions and routes for scenic rides. Additionally, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame feature exhibits of classic bikes, rallies, and tales of well-known motorcyclists from around the nation.  Let’s not forget, the food won’t disappoint you either.  Steak tips, anyone?

Deadwood

Situated in the Black Hills National Forest, Deadwood is home to some of the West’s most famous names.  Calamity Jane.  Wild Bill Hickok.  Seth Bullock.  This history rich town never closes.  By day, do some local shopping in the charming downtown. Enjoy the trolley while you’re at it. Ride some ATV trails, mini-golf, and be sure to experience the main street shoot out every day during the summer. Likewise, nightlife in Deadwood, SD, consists of old time and modern casinos, live entertainment, and numerous must-try restaurants that compete with the best in the country.

In summary, this is only the tip of the iceberg of things to do in the Northern Black Hills of SD.  We haven’t even touched on horse back riding and dude ranches. Just wait until you see the clear-as-can-be lakes and ice fishing. Similarly, simply exploring the region’s museums is a favorite pastime as well.  Just a fair warning:  You will likely fall in love with the communities and landscape of this American jewel.
